Staying in the Neighborhood

Ahmed Yusuf at his dining room table

Living in an apartment on 24th Street in Minneapolis, Ahmed Yusuf became aware of some townhomes being built across the street. “I liked their physical appearance very much,” he said, “and I had the sense there were some sort of good people involved in building them.” But it wasn’t until he attended a HomeStretch homebuyer workshop that he discovered some of those homes (the Franklin Station Townhomes, developed by PRG) were part of the City of Lakes Community Land Trust and learned what that meant.

What it meant was a home ownership option he could afford in a neighborhood where he wanted to stay. In November, Ahmed moved in to one of the townhomes. It was his first home purchase. And in December, Ahmed joined the CLCLT’s board of directors. In spite of moving in during the coldest time of year, he’s enjoying greeting his new neighbors. And as a social worker at the Community University Health Care Clinic, the location makes his commute easy. He’s working to bring his wife and two year-old son to the U.S. and looks forward to the day when the three of them can all call the place home.
